Navigating teenage years is difficult for many girls, and 15-year-old Deahjanae’s mother, Andrea, referred her to Big Brothers Big Sisters with the hope that she would be matched with a caring and dedicated individual who could offer her the support she needed. Big Sister Vicki was looking for a way to give back to her community, and decided to become a mentor for a local child, just as her parents were for her when she was growing up.
When Vicki and Deahjanae were matched in July 2016, the two had an instant connection and Vicki quickly became a trusted confidant for Deahjanae, who feels comfortable telling all her problems to Vicki knowing she is always there to help. Vicki truly enjoys talking with Deahjanae and hearing about all that is happening in her life. “She’s in high school right now so there’s always something going on! I love hearing her perspective on things,” says Vicki. “She’s so smart and looks at things in a unique way.”
Deahjanae turns to Vicki when she needs guidance about important decisions. “She gives me great advice about any situation,” says Deahjanae. “She is a great supporter when it comes to my career and my life. For one outing, she let me meet her friend that was an obstetrician that worked with babies. She was letting me in on some great information about a future career!”
Deahjanae says there is “never a dull moment” with Vicki, and they both look forward to the many adventures they have ahead. “My hope for Deahjanae in the future is that she is successful in any way that she defines success,” says Vicki. With the support and guidance of her Big Sister, truly anything is possible for Deahjanae.
