Miciyah, 17, is growing up in Elk Grove with her mother, Michelle. In September 2009, Miciyah was matched with her Big Sister, Jessica. The two developed an instant bond and their friendship blossomed from the beginning. “Miciyah has been such a blessing in my life from the day we met,” says Jessica.
Miciyah and Jessica enjoy talking about fashion and hair, and doing arts in crafts together. They can frequently be found baking cookies, painting each other’s nails, or visiting new places together, such as Old Sacramento and the Crocker Art Museum. “Jessica and I always try to experience something new,” Miciyah says. “She helps me step out of my comfort zone and try things I never would have thought about before.”
After being matched for eight years, it is clear that Jessica has had an incredible impact on Miciyah’s life. “Jessica really is a Big Sister I have never had and I am extremely thankful to be able to call her my sister,” Miciyah says. “With Jessica in my life, I am able to talk to another adult and look up to her as I do with my mom.” Since being matched with her Big Sister, Miciyah’s grades have improved, and she even made the honor roll at school. Recently, Jessica was there to help Miciyah prepare for her homecoming and prom dances, and she is incredibly proud of the confident young woman her Little Sister is growing up to be.
“I am more comfortable about myself with Jessica in my life,” Miciyah says. “She constantly reminds me how I am a beautiful and smart young lady and I can do anything I put my mind to. She is a courageous, smart, and independent woman and I love her for that. I keep a smile on my face whenever I am with Jessica, it is never a dull moment!”
