Miles, 14, is wise beyond his years and an independent thinker. His mom, Edlene, describes him as funny and easy-going, with a great sense of humor. Miles has had a difficult childhood and has not had the presence of his father for most of his life. To provide Miles with a positive male role model, his mom enrolled him in Big Brothers Big Sisters. “I wanted my boys to know that there are men who love and teach their children,” she says.
In March 2016, Big Brothers Big Sisters matched Miles with Ryan. Together, the two have built a friendship that is full of fun. They enjoy playing video games, going to the movies, and trying new places to eat. “My favorite thing about Ryan is that he is very smart and teaches me about computer technology,” says Miles. “He is also funny and we always have fun together!”
In addition to their fun outings, Ryan has also been a dependable friend for Miles when he needed it most. “Ryan was there for me when my grandmother died,” says Miles. “I am really glad that he was.”
As their relationship has grown, so has Miles’s personality. “Since being matched with Ryan, Miles is more talkative,” Edlene says. “He likes to share his ideas and is more confident.” Miles also recognizes the impact that his Big Brother has had in helping shape the teenager he is becoming. “Ryan teaches me that I can be strong, and I can be a leader.”
