Winter, 9, was matched with her Big Sister Regena in April 2017. Together, they enjoy being active outside. Some of their favorite outings together are having fun on the playground equipment at the park and eating frozen yogurt with lots of toppings. “I like being matched with Winter because she reminds me a little of myself when I was her age,” says Regena. “She is a little shy at times but as we spend more time together she has begun to come out of her shell. Winter is very flexible to try new things so we can experience lots of fun activities.”
Regena was inspired to begin her journey as a Big Sister because she wanted to be a positive influence to a child and give back to her community. “Having raised two children myself, I believe that as adults, it’s very important that we provide support in a way that will motivate a child to do their best,” says Regena. “Many children don’t have the opportunities that I have been fortunate to have, so I wanted to do what I could to encourage a child and help build their self-esteem and belief that through hard work and dedication, they can achieve their dreams.” In the year that they have been matched, Regena says that the experience has been just as rewarding for her as it has been for Winter.
Both Winter and Regena look forward to the new experiences they will share together, and Regena has complete faith that Winter will grow into an incredible young woman. “She already does well in school, so I hope that she continues,” says Regena. “I also hope that Winter continues to build her confidence to do whatever she wants in life and that she doesn’t limit herself. I hope that she continues to work hard, knowing that she can achieve her dreams.”
