Abigale is 12 years-old, and her mother, Amanda, describes her as quiet, shy, happy and intelligent. “Abbi needed more than just her mother as a role model,” says Amanda. “She needed another good, safe, responsible person in her life.” Amanda felt this support would come from a Big Sister, and in July 2015 they were introduced to Lynne.
As a child, Lynne looked up to her piano teacher and wanted to positively impact the life of a child in the way that her teacher did for her. She soon found many things that she and Abigale both enjoyed doing, and together they craft, create art, watch movies and play games. Some of Abigale’s favorite memories with Lynne have been going to a pottery class together, meeting Lynne’s cats and joining Lynne on her family’s river day. For Lynne, her favorite moments with Abigale are catching up on her day, and watching her grow.
Amanda notes that she has seen her daughter grow more confident and happier in the time that she has known her Big Sister. “Lynne is a wonderful person, warm, sensitive, caring and intelligent,” says Amanda. “I can’t say enough about how she’s made a difference in Abbi’s life in the past 3 years. I hope that Abbi turns out like Lynne someday. She is a role model for Abbi, a mentor to look up to.”
“Lynne is fun to be around, and always pleasant, never down,” says Abigale. “Lynne always does what I want to do, whether she wants to or not. She has offered to help me with my homework and school projects just so we can spend quality time together. Lynne has given me advice throughout our friendship and it has helped me be a better person and I have become more confident and not so sheltered and shy all the time. I really enjoy our outings together, she treats me like I’m part of the family. Lynne really cares about me and my future.”
Looking toward the future, Lynne hopes that her Little Sister always experiences happiness, independence and fun, and both Big and Little look forward to continuing their wonderful friendship. “I can really count on Lynne as a friend and who will always be there for me as I grow up,” says Abigale. “I won the lottery having Lynne as a Big Sister. I have always been able to talk to her about anything and everything, I can trust her. I hope Lynne is in my life as a friend forever!”
