William, 11, is outgoing and imaginative and is being raised by his mother, Tracy. Growing up, Tracy’s brother was a Little in the program and when her son lacked a relationship with his father, she enrolled him in Big Brothers Big Sisters.
In May 2016, William was matched with his Big Brother Kevin. Kevin was inspired to become a Big at his daughter’s suggestion, when he noticed himself spending a lot of time at work and felt he wasn’t sharing his time as much as he wanted to. Kevin had the guidance of his brother, Mark, growing up, and sought to pass this support on to another young man.
Together, William and Kevin enjoy going to the movie theater and playing tennis, and have even had exciting adventures like going to a reptile show and watching Sacramento Kings’ games. “We’ve done everything,” says Kevin. “I think the most fun parts are the chats we have in the car on the way to doing whatever we have planned.”
Since being matched, William’s mom describes him as more confident, and says that he feels much more accepted. Kevin has also been impacted by his relationship with William. “It’s nice to feel like I’m helping someone just by listening to them and spending some time with them,” says Kevin. William describes his Big Brother as very kind, and always looks forward to their time together.
Both Big and Little are excited for the future, and Kevin can’t wait to see all that William continues to accomplish. “I’ve helped reinforce his interest in things like music and tennis,” says Kevin. “I hope he learns to play the drums and enjoys it for life!”
