Defenders of Potential

Through one-to-one mentoring, we have a chance to have our region succeed in a way that we haven’t been able to before because we will have an educated workforce through kids going to college or trade schools. Through having someone as their advocate that champions them through life, our youth can rise to their full potential. Our investment in youth today impacts our tomorrow and influences many generations to come.

Mentoring Youth. Changing Futures.

Mission & Vision: Our mission is to create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth. Our vision is that all youth achieve their full potential.

Geographic Footprint: Since 1964, our local agency has cleared the path to the brightest possible future for youth in Sacramento, South Placer and Yolo counties.

Who We Serve: Our one-to-one mentoring program primarily benefits children, ages 7-18, who are being raised by single parents, grandparents or other extended family, and foster families.

How Our Program Works: We match and adapt each mentoring relationship according to the specific needs of the child (Little), and require that each volunteer (Big) commits to a minimum of one year to help in establishing trust and consistency with their Little. We believe that it’s a child’s birthright to succeed. Through the transformative power of mentorship, youth in our program gain confidence, build interpersonal skills, improve their grades, and begin to envision a more successful future for themselves.

On a human level, mentors show us that we are not alone. They show us that, in this vast world, there is someone on this journey who cares, is invested in our future, and is with us every step of the way. When a child is mentored, they are 55% more likely to go to college, 78% more likely to volunteer in their community, 90% more likely to mentor others, and 130% more likely to pursue leadership positions (The Mentoring Effect, 2014).
